Ethanolic Extracts of Leaves of Boerhavia diffusa Dose Determination in Rats

Wan Mohd Azizi, Wan Sulaiman

Abstract

Medicinal plants are an important part of natural resources and are now recognized worldwide. Acute toxicity is a preliminary study that generally serves as the basis for classification and labeling, provides preliminary information about the way the toxic action of a substance, determines the dose of a new compound, and helps to determine the dose in animal studies ( Balogun et al., 2014). In this study, an acute toxicity study was determined to optimize the dosage of extracts suitable for animal studies. This study aims to analyze the toxic effects of Hedyotis diffusa leaves to understand their potential for treating diseases in humans. Acute toxicity and oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) were performed on laboratory animals using selected plants. Yield was also determined using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol, and water extracts of oldenlandia diffusa leaves and seeds. Studies have shown that the ethanol extract of the leaves of Oldenlandia difossa has the highest yield.
