Abstract

In view of constantly rising power tariff and penalties imposed by the State Electricity Boards / Utility companies, it is imperative for any HT & LT Industry / Consumer to install an automatic power factor controller system for curtailment of power factor penalty and also to save energy by consistently maintaining higher power factor.[16] An intelligent automatic power factor controller unit is used to improve the power factor, it usually consists of a number of capacitors are controlled by a regulator that measures power factor in an electrical network. Depending on the load and power factor of the network, it will switch the necessary blocks of capacitors in steps to make sure the power factor stays above a selected value (usually demanded by the energy supplier)[11]. It has been implemented and tested using intelligent automatic power factor controller in STAS Spinning Mill PLtd, Madurai, TamilNadu.[11][16]
