Incorporation of Metamaterial with Patch Antenna for Microwave Sensor

Ragini Sharma, P.K. Singhal

Abstract

This paper proposed a patch antenna incorporated with wheel shaped metamaterial structure for microwave sensors. Metamaterial exhibits unconventional properties such as negative permeability and negative permittivity. Metamaterials obtained their properties from their structure rather than composition. Metamaterial is used for proper impedance matching of patch antenna. It reduces return loss of antenna and increases the gain of antenna. This antenna has been simulated at 2.1GHz frequency (R-Band) using CST software. Incorporation of metamaterial with patch antenna reduces back lobe radiations of patch antenna hence increases the directivity of antenna. The proposed antenna design has good agreement with its directional properties and also miniaturize patch antenna so it can be used in microwave sensors In previous work different designs of metamaterial have been presented. Most of them are designed for optical frequencies. In this paper a new structure of metamaterial is designed and analyzed for R-band of microwave frequency range.
