Wireless Sensor Networks - Energy Preservation in Target Localization

Y. Yasmine, T. Andrew Rayan

Abstract

In wireless sensor networks target tracking and localization are the important applications. In this paper, we have proposed a method for reducing the utilization of the energy in an efficient manner by using it in sector coverage. Since the disk coverage model requires 4 times more sensors for localization compared to detection applications. We then introduce the idea of sector coverage to tighten the lower bound. The lower bound derived through sector coverage is 2 times less than through disk coverage. A procedure is proposed to reduce the utilization of energy compared to that of disk coverage model. Here the sensors are placed at different location to ensure the coverage in the sensor network. Compared to disk coverage, sector coverage requires more computations. However, when using the sector coverage model with k-coverage in a distributed environment (ie) the sensors communicate with neighboring sensor to find the location of the target will reduce the energy utilization compared to that of the disk coverage. In this paper, we compare the performance of the proposed and the existing disk coverage model
