Abstract

Transportation is regarded as an index of economic, social and commercial progress of a country. An adequate and safe transportation is indispensible for economic and social progress of a nation and the world as a whole. Bridges are key components of a transportation infrastructure and restoring their health is an important criteria. This paper deals with a proposal for rehabilitation measures for an existing railway bridge in a southern city in India. The existing bridge faces many problems like smaller headroom, corroded steel plates and needs immediate rehabilitation. Hence an attempt has been made in this work to redesign the existing riveted type plate girder as a welded type plate girder with increased headroom by providing gradients at both the sides of the bridge. A Subway bridge for carriage way under the railway bridge has been introduced to provide a gradual gradient for the carriageway and the drainage system has been designed accordingly.
