An Efficient System for the Safety and Reliability of Railways

Preena Prasad, T.N. Praveen Sharma

Abstract

Rail inspection is a vital task in preventing accidents. The inspection of rails by human operators will be a slow and tedious process. In order to prevent this problem, a new technique is employed here. This describes a multisensory system and a vision system that ensures safety and efficiency on railways. Multisensory system consisting of infrared and ultrasonic sensors and the vision system based on highly effective camera is proposed. In this a stereo vision system is used to get the information about the physical appearance of the obstacle. This proposed method will help to avoid accidents in real time manner and ensure safety. Here a system for obstacle detection and train location estimation is proposed. The system consists of a microcontroller which is interfaced with the GPS module, GSM modem, an ultrasonic and infrared sensor and a stereo vision camera for fetching the data. Once the sensor senses the obstacle, it assumes an accident. Then the stereo vision camera will take the image of the obstacle. The sensor and the stereo vision camera send the information to the centralized server and to the display unit in the train. From the server the information is send to the station near the train.
