A RIoT Architecture for Performance Improvement of Railways in Developing Countries

Dr. Sumathy Eswaran, M. Bhuvaneswari

Abstract

Indian railways need a modernization way to bring the generation changes to its system and to assure safety to the users, improve its productivity to make use of the advance technology. These demands can be answered with the implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) using sensors and Wi-Fi. IoT are things having been identified and virtual personalities operate in smart space using intelligent interface to connect and communicate within social, environmental and user friendly ways. The improvement technology use ZigBee as present technology, using of IoT makes the enhancement in upcoming methods to be implemented for many trackside functionalities like tracking LOCO Speed, Coach Air-condition monitoring, Toilet cleanliness status, Overcrowding, Driver visibility factor, reserved Coach crowding, Soil quality identification as required, Safe Level crossing mechanism, Local Weather conditions in train route etc. This concept paper presents Railway Internet of Things (RIoT) architecture for the performance improvement in the Railway along trackside. RIoT architecture is expected to take the Railways forward from fix-on fail strategies to more proactive and preventive strategies for operation.
