Adaptive Two Stage Bilateral Filter for Image Denoising

S.S. Sujith, S Athi Narayanan

Abstract

In terms of noise removal, the conventional linear
filter works well in smooth regions, but significantly blurs the edgestructures of an image. In this paper, we present an adaptive bilateralfilter (ABF) for sharpness enhancement and noise removal. ABFsharpens an image by increasing the slope of the edges withoutproducing overshoot or undershoot The proposed method firstclassifies the pixels into two classes, which are “noise free pixel”and “noisy pixel” based o n t he intensity values. The corruptedpixels are replaced by “alpha trim- mean” value of uncorrupted pixelsin the filtering window. The proposed algorithm work very well forimages with lower percentage of impulse noise also.
