Concurrent Engineering: Impact on New Product Design and Development

Dr.V. Venkata Ramana

Abstract

In the present globalized scenario, Concurrent Engineering (CE) has a great deal of importance in design and development of new products in various industries such as automobile, electronic gadgets and is posing a big challenge to Indian firms. Impact of CE addresses major areas of product design and development in any organization. Most of the companies adopt CE procedures to reduce the new product introduction time into the market, especially firms of western countries and Middle East. This paper analyzes the influence of concurrent engineering practices followed by some selected Indian two wheeler automobile companies in the area of new product development as they thrive to improve their position in the competitive global markets. The investigation presents its evaluation based on analysis by application of statistical tools on the collected data, through a pre-tested questionnaire. The findings disclose that the selected two wheeler manufacturing companies in India are realizing maximum benefits with the implementation of the CE procedures in new product design and development process.
