High Efficiency Dual Input Converter for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

D. Drisya, G. Rajkumar

Abstract

A dual input DC/DC converter with high voltage gain and internal charge function for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) is developed. With a solar (main) source of 12 V and a battery (auxiliary) source of 24 V, a 5HP DC motor is driven here. The coupled inductor based converter uses only two semiconductor switches for converting the two different low voltage input sources to a high voltage DC. The battery is internally charge through coupled inductor from the main source. According to the operation of power management there are three states; standalone power supply state (Pmain = POUT) input power is taken from the main source only, charge state (Pmain > POUT) battery gets charged and the unify power supply state (Pmain < POUT) both solar and battery power is taken to drive the motor. The techniques of voltage clamping and soft switching were adopted to reduce the voltage stresses and the efficiency gets increased to 95%. Thus can enhance the utility of the electric motor in the HEV’s causing reduced fuel consumption rate and pollution.
