Abstract

India is an agricultural country. Our ancient people entirely depended on the agricultural harvesting. Agriculture is the back bone of our country in which modern techniques and methods should be implemented for the enhancement. Various plants and crops have different requirements for water, fertilizers and sun. Soil fertility for draining or gardening culture is generally judged by the level of nutrients and moisture content in it.

The project is designed to develop an automatic irrigation system which switches the pump motor ON/OFF on sensing the moisture content of the soil. The advantage of using this method is to reduce human intervention and still ensure proper irrigation by using renewable sources of energy which is the solar energy.

The solar panel can be installed over a well such that the surplus area accommodated by the conventional solar panels is curtailed. And also there is no inevitability of space for installation of solar panels. The water in the well will not be dehydrated. The energy produced from solar panels is stored in a battery for further irrigation purposes.

The project uses an Arduino controller which is programmed to receive the input signal of varying moisture condition of the soil through the soil moisture sensor. Once the controller receives this signal, it generates an output that drives a relay for operating the water pump. A GSM is also interfaced to the arduino controller to send status of the soil and water pump to the mobile through SMS.

The ultimate goal of this project is to make the farmers comfortable with watering the crops, using a renewable source of energy which is free from pollution and also to provide a wealthier and healthier nation with the help of modernization in agriculture.
